What a Boom Pump Is and When to Use It
A concrete boom pump is a lorry mounted pump fitted with a hydraulic, articulating arm known as the boom. Ready mixed concrete is discharged from the mixer truck into the pump hopper, and the boom carries it through a pipeline to the exact point of placement. The arm unfolds in sections and can be positioned vertically, horizontally and around obstacles, so the operator places concrete precisely where the pour team needs it without moving the vehicle.
Boom pumps come into their own where height, distance or obstructions make other methods slow or impractical. Typical situations include:
- Pouring upper floor slabs, columns and cores on multi storey buildings.
- Reaching over walls, scaffolding, existing buildings or live roads to a pour area behind them.
- Large volume foundation, raft and ground floor slab pours where a fast, steady output keeps the concrete supply and the finishing gang in step.

For confined sites, long horizontal runs through narrow passages, or smaller domestic pours, a ground line pump is often the better fit. Our concrete line pumps carry concrete up to 150 metres through flexible hose.

How much does boom pump hire cost?
Boom pump hire is priced on the size of the pump, the length of the pour, the location and the access on site. A 20m unit on a domestic pour costs less than a 53m unit on a high rise. How much space does a boom pump need?
The pump needs firm, level ground for its outriggers and clear space overhead for the boom to unfold. A 20m unit will work from a residential street, while the larger pumps need an open area with full outrigger clearance. Advanced Stability Control lets us rig short on one side where space is limited. We can arrange a site visit to confirm the safest position.
Can a boom pump reach over a house or a wall?
Yes. Reaching over obstacles is the main advantage of a boom pump. The right size depends on the height of the obstruction and the distance beyond it to the pour. Tell us those figures and we will confirm which boom suits.
Do I need to order the concrete separately?
Yes. We supply the boom pump and operator, and you order ready mixed concrete from your chosen supplier. We are happy to coordinate timings so the first mixer arrives as the pump is ready to prime.
How far in advance should I book?
As early as you can, particularly between spring and autumn when demand is highest. Once your concrete delivery date is confirmed, contact us to secure the pump.
What is the difference between a boom pump and a line pump?
A boom pump places concrete at height or over obstacles using its articulating arm and suits large and multi storey pours.
