As the weather warms up, driveways, patios, garden rooms and home extensions across the North West start coming to life. Spring and summer are by far the busiest months for residential concrete pours – and homeowners often find that planning ahead is the difference between a stress-free pour and a costly delay.

Most domestic concrete pumping problems come down to one thing: poor access. Residential sites tend to have narrow gates, rear gardens, neighbouring fences, garages and overhead cables that all need to be factored in.

Before you book, walk your site with these questions in mind:

• How close can a concrete truck get to the pour location?
• Are there gates, walls or outbuildings in the way?
• Is the ground stable enough to support a heavy vehicle?
• Are there overhead obstructions like cables, trees or balconies?

Ordering too little concrete means an emergency top-up call (and a nervous wait). Ordering too much means paying for cubic metres you don’t need. Both are easily avoided.

A boom pump uses a hydraulic arm to deliver concrete over and around obstacles. That means:

• Pouring into a rear garden without dragging hose through the house
• Reaching over fences, walls, garages and outbuildings
• Avoiding damage to driveways, lawns or block paving
• Completing the job in a fraction of the time of a line pump

Concrete line pumps still have their place – they’re cost-effective for small, accessible pours, typically starting from around £300–£500. But if your site has any meaningful access challenge, a boom pump (from around £500 upwards) usually pays for itself in saved labour and reduced disruption.

1. Set-up (30–45 minutes): the operator positions the pump, sets outriggers and primes the lines.
2. Pour (1–2 hours for most domestic jobs): concrete is delivered steadily and placed exactly where you need it.
3. Wash-down and pack-up (20–30 minutes): lines are flushed and the operator leaves the site clean.
