Warm weather makes outdoor work easier in many respects, but fresh concrete does not respond to summer heat the way a site team might hope. As temperatures climb, the window between concrete arriving on site and it becoming too stiff to place and finish narrows considerably. Understanding what is happening inside the mix, and planning around it, is the difference between a concrete pour that goes smoothly and one that causes problems from the moment the truck arrives.
How heat affects fresh concrete
Concrete gains its strength through a chemical reaction between cement and water, a process known as hydration. Curing begins the moment the concrete surface has been finished and continues for as long as moisture needs to be retained for the hydration reaction to complete.
